Wan-Chun Alex Ma is a staff research scientist at ByteDance. Prior to ByteDance he was affiliated with Google, Activision Blizzard, ETH Zurich, Weta Digital, and USC. His research interests include facial animation, performance capture, image-based modeling, geometry processing and machine learning. He has contributed to the motion capture technology used in the Hobbit trilogy, Iron Man 3, Planet of the Apes series, Furious 7, Call of Duty series, and so on. Ma received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement in 2019 for his work on high resolution facial appearance scanning. He received his Ph.D. from National Taiwan University in 2008.
