Biography
Mary Whitton is research professor (retired) of computer science at UNC-Chapel Hill where for 20 years she co-led the Effective Virtual Environments (EVE) research group. She was honored with the 2021 IEEE VGTC Virtual Reality Career Award. She was a founder of Ikonas Graphics (1978) and Trancept Systems (1987) whose products were high-end user-programmable hardware with software libraries for graphics, image processing, volume rendering, and visualization. Whitton is a senior member of ACM; she served as ACM SIGGRAPH Chair/President 1993-1995 and is now Chair of ACM SIGGRAPH’s History Committee. Whitton received the ACM SIGGRAPH Outstanding Service Award in 2013.
