Kimball is the CTO at Wētā FX, Ltd. in New Zealand. While looking after general VFX strategy for the studio, he has a long career focused on image processing and more recently, rendering. He was written software designed for the motion picture industry for 30 years. He is an active contributor to open source software, including a member of the OpenEXR steering committee and the chair of the technical advisory committee for the Academy Software Foundation. Among other accolades, in 2012 he and his colleagues were awarded a scientific and engineering award by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences for image processing software used for film restoration and image reparation.
